SALLY GO ROUND THE ROSES - June 2020

Sally Go Round the Roses, the title of a one hit wonder released by girl band The Jaynettes in 1963. This was Andy Warhol’s favourite song, and stated it was “the greatest pop record ever to be released”. It is said it was the only song he ever listened to whilst he worked in his studio on his early pop-art.

The song gives advice to Sally, telling her not to go downtown as she would see her lover with another girl. Instead she should go to the garden and to see the roses. They would lift her mood.

The power of nature and being outside can be a great relief from anxiety and feeling down. We have all been affected in various different ways due to Covid-19, but I hoped that shooting in Hackney, East London could show that nature’s beauty can be found in the city too; and in those small pockets of nature one can always find solace.

This collection takes inspiration from the late 60s and 70s, especially the care free attitude of the era, not to take life too seriously. To be positive and optimistic, to believe anything is possible. To dress up for yourself even if it is for your one walk a day.

Amongst this time of uncertainty, I hope this collection brightens your day and brings a smile to your face! :)
